In this fall course we will learn the alphabet and use this to learning to read in Spanish. Although a child will be able to read it orally, they may not understand everything; however, this is their rudimentary start to speaking the language. We will learn basic cordial greetings, sing special holiday songs and have fun learning through games and activities. This will be taught through the use of worksheets, transparencies, videos. Pre-requisite: Able to read 3rd grade level. Copy words from the whiteboard or transparency. Devote 20 minutes a day to reviewing at home, access to the internet. GENERAL INFORMATION OF CLASSES |
The literature classes are designed to enhance the student's background in literature and to equip the student with tools for literary analysis. Students will read the works of well-known authors, works representing a variety of genres. Each Friday the teacher will give the students reading and writing assignments for independent study, and in class each Friday students will have the opportunity to share their observations and opinions with fellow students in teacher-directed discussions. Students will write informal responses and essays and one formal literary analysis each semester. Assigned books may be checked out of the library or purchased at bookstores. Most can usually be found at our good used bookstores here. |
BRITISH LITERATURE |
materials fee $45.00. monthly fee $45 A Survey of British Literature is an overview of English literature from the Old English through the Modern English periods, with an examination of the Christian influence as the "thread that runs so true." The course is designed to give students the opportunity to interact with the material in writing and in classroom discussions. In addition to reading assignments in the text and informal writing assignments, there will be one book assigned to read each month and a formal critical analysis to be written each semester. British literature is a senior level course and is offered to sophomores, juniors, and seniors. Seniors and juniors and returning students are given preference. We will have some "planned projects" in which I will be teaching specific lessons, but I intend to spend the majority of the time on individualized pieces in which the students can really "get into" their own ideas while we work on technique. We will predominately be working with color and do some clay sculpting. |

An essay will be assigned every other week and will be read aloud in class. Alternating weeks will focus on the development and practice of a new writing technique or style. This class is for those students who need a Chemistry credit for high school but will either never take Chemistry in college or will not be going to college or who have not completed the necessary math skills for the Honors Chemistry Class. HONORS CHEMISTRY AND LAB |
We will study all aspects of Chemistry including but not limited to: atoms- their properties, how they react, how they bond; moles; stoichiometry; gas laws; organic chemistry; balancing chemical equations; states of matter; chemical equilibrium; acids and bases; oxidation-reduction; and other topics. This class involves daily homework, weekly reading, and periodic testing. Students must have taken and have a working knowledge of Algebra I and I prefer they be enrolled in Algebra II or higher. Extreme Writing is a class where you can learn the proper technique of good writing, coupled with exposure to exciting and thought-provoking stories, beautiful (and funny!) poetry, and activities that will inspire even the most reluctant writer. We will use the writing process and the 6+1 Traits of Writing (Ideas, Organization, Voice, Word Choice, Sentence Fluency, Conventions, and Presentation) as the basic framework for identifying, discussing, and practicing good writing. Vocabulary, spelling, and grammar will be addressed as part of our study. Selected individual and class projects will be published. We will end the year with a Readers Theater performance of an original story written by the class. |

ART II – FOR AGES 9 AND UP |
$45.00 per month Supply Fee $15.00 per semester Description: Students will concentrate primarily on drawing in the Fall and painting in the Spring. We will work with pencil, charcoal and pastels as students explore a variety of subject matter. They will learn about values and composition and how to draw accurately. In the spring, students will work primarily with watercolor and acrylic. Advanced students will receive a set of printed note cards each semester from one of their paintings. GOVERNMENT / ECONOMICS 10TH – 12TH GRADES |
Fee: $40 per month. Typically studied in a student’s 12th grade year, this class will be taught one semester government and one semester economics, thus giving students ½ credit for each course, consistent with TEA requirements. Government will cover American government, with emphasis on political activism of Christians today. Strongly recommend US History as a prerequisite. Students completing the course in 2007-08 or 2008-09 will be eligible to participate in a field trip to the Texas legislature planned for the spring 2009 legislative session.
